WHEN CAN WE EXPECT THE 80386 FROM IBM?

By CBR Staff Writer

Menlo Park consultant David Hanna expects IBM to announce an 80386 machine this month, Esther Dyson aligns with our most persuasive source in going for February, Ulric Weil says not before mid-year, we don’t expect the machine to be available in any numbers before September at the earliest, and Compaq’s Rod Canion reckons IBM may well not announce an 80386 machine before next year – but if a survey alluded to in the Wall Street Journal is any guide, it may not matter much when, if ever, IBM launches the machine: subscribers will recall that 18 months ago, most of the known world was waiting for an IBM PC2; the machine never materialised, but in a market survey taken at the time, 4.3% of the respondents thought that they owned a PC2.
