US storage vendor Western Digital Corp has launched a family of hard drives designed specifically for use in the home entertainment market. The Irvine, California-based company said WD Performer is tailored for use in digital video recorders, set-top boxes, home servers, audio or video juke boxes, TV receivers and other consumer products.

The new line handles multiple audio/video streams, supporting simultaneous recording and playback. This makes it possible to ‘pause’ live TV programs, and then resume viewing without missing anything. This is made possible by an adaptive cache, which is designed specifically to handle large block sequential transfers.
