The Western Digital Imaging Mountain View arm of Western Digital Corp, Irvine, says it has the first IBM 8514/A-equivalent graphics chip set: called the Personal Workstation Graphics Array 1, the set is claimed to be compatible with and to provide speed, resolution and integration improvements over the two-chip set on the 8514/A Display Adaptor: the set has a Turbo 4-bit BITBLT mode which, in 4-bit mode, can increase BITBLT performance by up to three times that of the 8514/A, and supports XT and AT as well as Micro Channel buses, and interlaced and non-interlaced monitors at up to 1,280 by 1,024 resolution where the 8514/A works only on Micro Channel-based systems, and with interlaced monitors at a maximum resolution of 1,024 by 768; the 60MHz clock speed of the PWGA1 is 30% faster than the IBM part and the memory cycle 50% to 100% faster; with samples in July, volume later in the third quarter, the set will be $142 when you buy 100-up.
