Western Digital Corp, Irvine, California has penetrated the Comecon market, signing a letter of intent with Bulgaria’s Economic Organisation for Disk Drive Memories, based in Stara Zagora, under which the Insyst trade organisation would distribute Western Digital products in Bulgaria and supply it with Bulgarian components for the production of hard disk drives at Western Digital’s Singapore plant; a joint venture for manufacture of some of Western’s products in Bulgaria is also on the cards, but to start the thing off, the Bulgarians have agreed to buy $1.3m of Western Digital motherboards, hard disk drives and FileCards for use in the Organisations computers; years ago, the Bulgarians were given the mission to produce the entire Comecon requirement of disk drives and still make 85% of the drives manufactured within the trading bloc; the US government must approve the technology transfer before it can progress to a definitive agreement.
