WEST GERMANY PROPOSES TO LICENSE A THIRD DIGITAL CELLULAR OPERATOR…

By CBR Staff Writer

West Germany is to license a third digital cellular telephone consortium to compete with the system being built by the Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, and the one awarded to the Mannesmann Mobilfunk GmbH consortium at the end of last year. The announcement will raise the hopes of Racal Telecommunications Plc, which was in the Bayerische MotorenWerke AG consortium with Cofira SA of France, BellSouth Corp of the US and German petrol company Veba AG that is believed to have been a close second in the bidding last time around, and might well be reactivated with additional small German investors in order to increase its chances this time around.
