As WellSpan implemented and increased use of its Cerner Millennium suite of applications, the end-user experience with Citrix performance diminished. WellSpan says that this was because Millennium required a larger software client and needed more processing power and resources to run effectively on back-end Citrix servers. The health system turned to AppSense to optimize CPU and memory usage, and deliver faster, more reliable performance for end-users.
Providing a solid IT foundation for our e-CARE system is essential to our business, said William Gillespie, CIO of WellSpan. AppSense helps optimize our server environment, enabling us to get better performance with more concurrent users.
Upon installing AppSense, WellSpan says it immediately optimized CPU and memory usage. Log-in times were lowered to under 20 seconds. Users now gain access to the Millennium application in just 10-12 seconds, whereas without AppSense it took anywhere from 30-90 seconds.
The health system now also has 60-80 concurrent users per Citrix server, with no performance degradation. CPU utilization on each server reaches 70-90%.
We’re very pleased that WellSpan Health, which is committed to the highest-quality care, is relying on AppSense to ensure that clinicians can reliably and instantly access their mission-critical Cerner Millennium application, said Charles Sharland, CEO of AppSense.
