WEBTV TEAMS WITH SEGA FOR NET TV VERSION OF DREAMCAST

By CBR Staff Writer

Microsoft Corp’s WebTV Networks has inked a deal with Sega Enterprises Ltd to launch a version of the Dreamcast console (CI No 3,416) aimed at the internet TV market. The special edition of the Dreamcast – essentially an interactive set-top box – will come with a WebTV CD ROM and will offer net TV services and online gaming capabilities. The Dreamcast console, which will be released in November of this year in Japan, is expected to sell 1 million units by the end of 1998. However, it is the online gaming market that WebTV really has its eye on, as gamers attracted by the graphics of the Dreamcast machine will be signed onto WebTV’s subscriber list. According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the special version of the Dreamcast box will be out in Japan in spring 1999.
