The company is said to have signed contracts with employers and major health insurers for the provision of private access areas for employees. These areas enable employees to look up their own medical records, get information on diseases and compare ratings on healthcare providers.

Head of WebMD, Marty Wygod, told the New York Times that corporate America is looking to educate its employees about healthcare costs and, in so doing, move a substantial amount of those costs off their books.

Among the big health insurers, WebMD claims to have secured contracts with Aetna, Cigna and WellPoint, and of the country’s big employers, Bank of America, Cisco Systems, Dell Computer, IBM, Pfizer and Shell Oil.
