Spending on advertising on the web rose $423m in the second quarter, according to the quarterly survey from the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) That’s a 20% increase over the first quarter and a 98% hike from the year-ago quarter. The IAB has PricewaterhouseCoopers conduct a survey of its 200 or so members, who between them own more than 1,200 web sites. The leading sector was computing at 26%, followed by consumer-related (24%) financial services (13%), new media (13%) and telecoms (9%). The IAB survey is generally considered to be the nearest thing to definitive, and these days almost all of the ad sales are for cash, rather than in exchange for other services, which was the case in the early days.
