The Water Research Centre Plc, based in Medmenham, Buckinghamshire is using a Vodafone and Racal-Vodata cellular data transmission equipment to study the impact of impurities and pollution drained into rivers – by diverting the water under investigation so that it flows through tanks containing rainbow trout so that silver oxide electrodes can pick up the electrical impulses generated by the trout as they breathe and detect changes as the fish are affected by build-ups on impurities: an remote site in Lancashire is studying the effect of urban run-off, and the site is using a Vodafone and CDLC modem to retrieve data; the CDLC protocol provides data rates of up to 2,400bps, full duplex, 1,200 bps under severe reception conditions.
