Waterloo, Ontario-based WatCom Ltd has been signed by IBM Corp to develop and market OS/2 2.0 versions of its 32-bit optimising compilers for Fortran 77 and C: the compilers will support the development of 32-bit applications for OS/2 2.0, and also the use of OS/2 2.0 as a host system for 32-bit cross-development for target environments such as MS-DOS, Windows and embedded systems; the Fortran 77 compiler is run-time compatible with the C compiler, implying that both compile down to the same intermediate code, and simplifying both direct inter-language function calls and mixed-language debugging, WatCom comments.
