With Wang Laboratories’ personal computer factory in Sterling on the market in a load-and-go state of readiness, there is likely to be a queue of interested buyers, and it could well be that Amstrad Plc will take more than a passing look at the property: its quest for credibility in the business market, plus the pressing need for local manufacture ahead of the 1992 European Single Market make it desirable that the company take its manufacturing into its own hands, and the the contract manufacturing agreement for personal computers with GEC Plessey Telecommunications is for only 20% of Amstrad’s requirement – and no doubt is on a basis of not more than a year’s contract with annual options for renewal.
