Wang Laboratories Inc’s decision to open the specifications of its Open/image architecture to third party software companies, and to embrace links to computers from competing manufacturers is something of a switch in the company’s strategy, which had been to offer closed systems that were all its own work: the new idea is to make the image side of the system all Wang, but to enable its systems to draw data from applications residing on machines from the likes of IBM and DEC; the new strategy was spurred by the fact that imaging systems sales for the company’s last fiscal to June 1988 were only $30m against Wang’s $100m target. System Industries Inc chairman, president and chief executive has resigned to pursue other interests, and the troubled Milpitas, California integrator of disk subsystems has turned to its former chief operating officer Paul Emery, who returns from Santa Cruz Operation.
