Wang Laboratories Inc has cut prices on its low-end VS 5000 computers an average 25% with cuts up to 40% on entry-level configurations. The company also introduced four new VS 5000s in 12 configurations, ranging in price from $12,000 to $125,000 similar configurations previously cost $18,400 to $139,000. As further come-ons, the company is now offering one-year limited warranties on new VS 5000 and VS 8000 central processing units, and is offering a free Wang Fax-150 facsimile machine with every new VS 8000 or VS 10000 it sells. Enhancements to the VS 5000s include more memory in base configurations, inclusion of a tape drive as standard, and price cuts on SCSI peripherals. Wang also said that the next generation of VS processors is in the advanced design stage and should be ready for market early next year, and that it will be stressing larger, more powerful models for the 1990s. The VS 8000s and 10000s are to be migrated to SCSI interface peripherals, and its networking software is to be migrated from proprietary achitectures to Unix or to other vendor-independent environments.
