A ring-round by the Wall Street Journal of major corporate users in the US found absolutely nothing for the comfort of the blue bloods of the computer industry, with major users saying that they were putting off mainframe purchases until they had detailed comparison data on the new offerings from IBM Corp, Amdahl Corp and Hitachi Data Systems Inc, and saying that in personal computers they were not only buying fewer than last year, but where they were buying they were trading down to cheap no-name clones where previously they bought IBM or Compaq Computer Corp machines; Apple Computer Inc seems a little better placed, because its sales are more skewed to smaller companies and individuals, and sales are seen to be holding up rather better there.
