A precise 5.76m square inches of Polish-produced semi-conductor grade silicon wafers will be arriving shortly in the US – with more to come if successful – after a deal concluded between the US distributor Ziti Inc and Unitra/Cemat, the main Polish electronics manufacturer. Apart from the fact that the two companies have spent 18 months bringing the four-inch wafers into line with the relevant US standards, the manufacture of silicon products in Poland is in itself fraught with difficulties, reports Electronic News: among other tnings, Unitra/Cemat has problems coming out with the finished product because of a lack of top-quality polishing equipment. Neverless, Ziti president Wayne Womack states that reception of the wafers in the US has been good, but admits that there’s still fine tuning to be done, of course before the imaginative venture can come to fruition.
