The new systems will be installed in taxis over the course of the next year. As part of the partnership, WABC will provide a customized version of its Eyewitness News program, which will be updated several times a day with the latest news and weather information.
The video will be fed via wireless broadband technology from WABC’s website hub to thousands of moving taxicabs equipped by VeriFone Transportation Systems.
The content delivery capabilities are part of a comprehensive system designed to enable the acceptance of credit and debit cards, automate collection and submission of trip data, deliver content to passengers, and provide electronic message transmission to drivers. Currently, the systems and the station’s content are available in 50 taxis as part of a final technology trial by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC).
In addition to WABC content, ESPN, the station’s corporate partner, is providing sports news on the 50 trial systems. Zagat Survey is also providing ratings, reviews, and directory information for restaurants, nightlife spots, shopping options and hotels, all available with a touch screen located in the taxi passenger compartment.
The systems will also feature a GPS map and an electronic credit card reader for fares and tolls. The unique interactive systems were designed by VeriFone Transportation Systems under guidelines from the TLC as part of a service improvement system designed to enhance fleet management and improve customer service.
WABC will serve as the primary sales agent for advertising on the systems. Advertisers will be able to choose from a variety of video and interactive messages, reaching hundreds of thousands of taxi riders in a unique environment.
