The VRML Virtual Reality Modeling Language Consortium has issued a roadmap planning out the further development of its 3D specification for the internet. The Consortium, which has 65 member companies, has elected a new Executive Committee headed by Neil Trevett of 3DLabs Inc and Tony Parisi of Intervista Software Inc, which will form task groups to lead the proposed initiatives. They include the use of VRML as an integrated media format for page animation, streaming and compression for VRML files, interoperability of VRML content between popular clients and clients and authoring tools, and the use of VRML in enterprise computing and database applications. VRML has so far mostly been used on the Web for such 3D applications as advertising, page animation, online gaming and education. VRML became an approved International Standard ISO/IEC 14772, or VRML 97, at the end of last year (CI No 3,337).
