There is an innocence about the Germans that in normal times can be quite touching: commenting on a major currency fraud that may have cost the company $259m last year, and was perpetrated by wholesale erasing of computer tapes and modifying of programs, Volkswagen AG supervisory board chairman Karl Gustaf Ratgen told a radio interviewer, in this case, a degree of criminal energy has been brought into play which until now was unimaginable in a German company.
