The redundancies are an indication that the congested mobile domestic market is unable to sustain the present competition in the Australian telecom climate.

The reduction was deemed necessary given the increasingly competitive environment ahead.

In the press statement Vodafone said: Customer growth rates worldwide are slowing. In Australia these trends are exacerbated by the highly competitive market with six networks.

This downscaling is a direct result of the company’s failure to purchase Cable & Wireless Optus in March, losing out to Singapore Telecommunications.

Vodafone had planned to combine operations with Optus’s mobile unit to reduce the company in to a more streamline operation of five networks.

Further alliances are expected in the future to ease competition.
