VMware launches two new open source projects for cloud-native apps

The projects will speed up enterprise adoption of the applications.

By CBR Staff Writer

VMware has launched two new open source projects to help enterprise developers build, deploy and manage cloud-native applications securely.

Project Lightwave intends to extend enterprise-scale and security of cloud-native applications via identity and access management while Project Photon provides a lightweight Linux operating system optimised for these applications.

Lightwave will help enterprises manage identity across complex networks of microservices and several applications with the ability to enforce access control across an entire infrastructure and application stacks.

The project features centralised identity management, multi-tenancy, open standards support, enterprise-ready scalability and certificate authority and key management.

The Photon project, which is being optimised for VMware vSphere and VMware vCloud Air environments, will allow enterprises to run both containers and virtual machines natively on a single platform.

Enterprises will also be allowed to deliver container isolation when containers run within virtual machines.

VMware vice-president and chief technology officer for cloud-native applications Kit Colbert said: "Through these projects VMware will deliver on its promise of support for any application in the enterprise — including cloud-native applications — by extending our unified platform with Project Lightwave and Project Photon.
