VLSI Technology Inc, San Jose reckons it is first to market with a commercially available Gigabit Ethernet chip, the VNS67500, and will show it off at the Networld+InterOp trade show in Las Vegas next month. VLSI believes it was in a race with Texas Instruments Inc, IBM Corp and Lucent Technologies Inc to get a part to market first. The chip uses the Media Access Control implementation from Packet Engines Inc. The VNS67500 part is fabricated in 0.5 micron CMOS and is sampling now at $60 a time.
