Vitesse Semiconductor is helping system designers develop high-density, 10Gbps port count SFP+ line cards with the introduction of the newly enhanced VSC8242, a high-performance clock and data recovery integrated circuit.

According to the company, the VSC8242 is specifically designed to extend 10Gbps data transmission in optical, copper cable, and backplane applications. This multiport clock and data recovery (CDR) is expected to solve difficult high-speed signal integrity design challenges through the use of Vitesse’s VScope waveform viewing technology and FlexEQ electronic dispersion compensation and adaptive equalization technology.

Supporting the widest array of data rates and protocols, the enhanced VSC8242 enables economical and efficient deployment of next-generation networking equipment for storage, blade servers, carrier telecom, and datacom applications, said Vitesse.

Vitesse claims that the CDR offers better performance on a variety of physical media. For longer distances, the device extends optical transmission at 10G data rates on single mode fiber by over 50% and compensates for both chromatic- and polarization-mode dispersion for distances greater then 10km on exiting 2.5G networking infrastructure. For shorter optical distances, where high-density and lower system cost is paramount, the device enables a 10X speed upgrade on low-grade FDDI fiber from 1GE to 10GE for distances greater then 220 meters.
