VITESSE: 10,000-GATE GaAs

By CBR Staff Writer

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp, Camarillo, California claims the world’s first VLSI GaAs product, a 10,000 gate array. The VSC10000 is said to offer up to twice the speed of current ECL products, at power dissipation of a third to a quarter that of comparable complexity ECL arrays. First samples have already been produced, Macro libraries and prototype ships are set for first quarter 1989, with production in the second half. The VSC10000 has 13,376 two-input NOR gates with 100 pS typical delay, and is optimised for 1,100 high drive D-type flip flops. Typical engineering costs are $80,000 to $100,000, with unit commercial parts at $400 to $800.
