Vitacom Inc claims to have installed the first privately-owned Ku-band satellite point-to-point link in Germany. The network system provides private data communications between Cologne in the former West Germany to Halle in what was East Germany and has been operational since September. Under the contract awarded by Scientific Consulting/Infoware, Vitacom provided Cologne Stadtanzeiger Newspaper with 3.7 metre earthstations which work over Greenwich, Connecticut-based Pan American Satellite’s PAS-1 satellite. Vitacom’s network has been implemented as part of a system to send versions of the newspaper from computers in Cologne to local printers in Halle. The station is managed and monitored with Vitacom’s Diagnostic and Monitoring System, which enables measurement and control of various parameters of the earthstation.
