Spanish anti virus company Panda Software (http//www.pandasoftware.com/)says it has isolated the first known virus that is specific to Windows 98 – and this before the operating system has even been officially released. Called HPS after a rodent-borne human illness specific to North America (which makes us wonder whether the whole thing is a joke), the polymorphic virus is supposed to invert the image on a users’ screen. Separately, early UK users of Windows 98 are complaining that if the ‘Gold’ edition 98 (nee Memphis) is installed over Windows 95, the PC apparently reverts to a blank blue screen and won’t load the new operating system.
