Version 1.0 of the VIA Virtual Interface Architecture specification which Compaq Computer Corp, Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp have defined, providing high-speed communication interfaces for clustering servers together is now publicly available. The three say over 100 companies have contributed to the spec and expect firs products to be available in 1998. Sun Microsystems Inc, notably absent from the list of companies which stood up in support of VIA when it was announced back in April (CI No 3,142), said yesterday it is likely to support VIA and other Intel-oriented technologies if its Solaris x86 OEMs require it.
