Virgin, which leases capacity from Deutsche Telekom’s One 2 One network, added 264,359 new customers compared with 262,043 in Q4 2000. This came even though the total number of new connections fell from 5.5 million in Q4 2000 to just 1.2 million in the last quarter.

We have been aided by recent distribution agreements with Carphone Warehouse and the Dixons Group and we are really only just getting established there and did it in the nick of time for Christmas, Virgin told the press.

The company now plans to persuade its existing customers to upgrade their phones, while also still trying to poach people from rival networks.
