Virgin Media Business has announced that it is giving its Ethernet Extensions and High Capacity Services a speed boost by introducing 10Gbit/s point-to-point connections. The firm says that this should enable companies to move more data between locations at a faster rate.

"Businesses are facing a tsunami of data that needs to get from A to B without delay. Data volumes are only going to increase, as is the demand for instant, faultless communication. In today’s business world, time is not a luxury that organisations have," said Mark Heraghty, managing director, Virgin Media Business.

The new 10Gbit/s Ethernet Extension Service enables companies to connect multiple sites up to 35Km apart, via a dedicated link across the Virgin Media Business fibre network. The Ethernet Extensions will be managed by Virgin Media Business.

Virgin Media Business says that High Capacity Services is a point-to-point service that can support up to 40 x 10Gbit/s circuits between two sites. The low latency transmissions will be aimed primarily at financial services companies and public sector bodies.

"Our superior connections have been designed for applications that are bandwidth-hungry and time sensitive. Reducing the complexity involved in sharing information and services, allows the network to help businesses to be faster, smarter and more innovative," said Heraghty.

The company added that the new services can save up to 80% on energy use, which will help companies comply with the new carbon reduction commitment (CRC) initiative.
