As a result of the deal the Russian operator will be able to conduct data and video communications in packet mode as well as voice communications in AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) circuit mode.

In addition to this, Alcatel’s UMTS solutions will enable VimpelCom to test new high-speed/high-quality mobile multimedia applications such as chat, multiparty videoconferencing, video streaming, MP3 music downloading, web browsing, and multimedia SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) calls between multimedia terminals.

Alcatel’s network will allow VimpelCom to carry out UMTS field trials. The company is one of three selected to test the technology’s compatibility with existing radio transmissions, and its commercial viability by the Russian ministry of Telecommunications.
