VideoLogic Ltd launched its 128-bit graphics and movie accelerator this week, boasting the kit would knock about $75 per user off video RAM alternatives yet provide the same level of performance. The King’s Langley, UK-based multimedia company said the GrafixStar 600 technology, targeted at Microsoft Corp Windows users and games enthusiasts, had taken one year to develop and would be in volume production in May. Based on the new 128-bit ET6000 from Tseng Labs Inc of Newtown, Pennsylvania, the board comes with software drivers for Windows95 and 3.11 and IBM Corp OS/2, and can support resolutions to 1,600 by 1,200, up to 16.7m of colors and refresh rates to 150Hz. The board comes with 2.25Mb of multibank dynamic RAM, upgradable to 4.25Mb, and can sustain data throughput of 600Mb per second or 1Gb at peak. A Prolabs multimedia compact disk with three software titles will be bundled with GrafixStar to enable users to manipulate both music and videos via a personal computer. GrafixStar will be available worldwide for about $225 from next month.
