Cupertino, California-based Symantec Corp has launched version 2.0 of Enterprise Developer, its application development tool for the client-server environment based on business models, rather than screeds of code. Version 2.0 has a number of enhancements. The trigger express feature generates server-based code directly from the model, making development quicker. The data migration facility copies data and transfers all rules without the user having to specify the data source. Only the application need be specified and Enterprise Developer will move the data to the database of choice. There are four new rules for forms building and all of Visual Basic’s controls can now be used. Symantec says this will help give applications better-looking interfaces. Other enhancements include those of access; it is claimed to be easier for developers to see who is doing what, where. The product uses something called SCALE – Scalable Architecture for Large Enterprise, designed to hide the complexity of programming by isolating the application from the database and automating the client-server interaction. SCALE is made up of three components: a repository, a transaction processor and data links. The repository stores the local data model, business rules and data location. The transaction processor manages relationships between data elements and automates query-update processes. The data links provide direct links to databases; upgrades to version 2.0 are $150.
