Fremont, California-based Versant Corp, has acquired Soft Mountain SA, a French software development company based in Ecully, for an undisclosed amount. Soft Mountain, one of a number of spin-offs from the INREA research labs, has specialized in so- called reactive object technology, a deterministic method that enables programs to react differently to business objects when activated for the first time, second time and so-on. It’s a technology that could help simplify the back-end systems of electronic commerce applications, and make it easier to customize front-end e-commerce applications. Soft Mountain has developed CORBA-compliant Reactive preprocessor tools for Java and C++, and the Reactive Magnets rapid application tool. The event-driven technology is very complementary to Versant’s object database, the company claimed. Versant customers who currently have to write explicit C++ or Java code to register events will be able to use a drag and drop approach for event registration by using Soft Mountain Software. Company founder Guillaume Doumenc becomes associate vice president of Versant. The development labs will stay in France, and the company will be run as a wholly-owned subsidiary. Versant, one of the pioneers of the pure object database, recently changed its name from Versant Object Technology Corp.
