According to the report, 4.6 million new domains were registered in the second quarter of 2004, representing a 2.5% sequential growth. Globally, the number of registered domains peaked at 64.5 million, up 7% in the first half of the year.

The report reveals that growth statistics for domain name registrations have reached levels previously seen during the height of domain registrations in the late 1990s, VeriSign said in a statement.

The .com domain, which VeriSign runs, still accounts for most of the active domains, but country-code top level domains (ccTLDs) now account for 39% of all registrations, the firm reported.
