Having established its OnSite software as a public key infrastructure service platform, VeriSign Inc has turned its attention to addressing the needs of custom and third-party application developers. The result, launched this week, is a family of components designed to help those developers incorporate digital certification into messaging, VPN, remote access, intranet and extranet applications. The firstborn member of the Go Secure family deals with messaging, and should make it easier for users of Exchange to acquire and use digital certificates for secure email.

Why is messaging one of the areas we’re focusing on? asked VeriSign’s Steve Crawford, because when we look at the drivers in the market, we see email becoming a mission critical application for corporate customers. With Go Secure for Exchange, VeriSign has tried to make it easier for end users to obtain and use digital certificates and easier for administrators to deploy and support secure email applications. Go Secure works natively with Exchange servers and Outlook clients, while as for interoperability VeriSign’s public root is already embedded in many S/MIME browsers. A similar component for Lotus Corp messaging software is due out before the end of the year.
