Storage Technology Corp has been handed a legal victory three years after its patent infringement battle with Odetics Inc began a federal judge has overturning the $70.6m jury verdict against the company handed down in March (CI No 3,379). At that time, a jury had awarded Odetics damages after finding that StorageTek had infringed certain patents covering automatic tape libraries. Soon after, StorageTek filed an appeal to overturn the jury’s verdict. A first trial, in 1996, had ended with a victory for StorageTek. The battle may not be over yet, though, as Odetics has said it will appeal the latest ruling.
