Amber Wave Systems Inc, Acton, Massachusetts developer of of AmberSwitch, what it claims is the industry’s highest-performance, lowest cost workgroup local network switching system, reports that it has raised an undisclosed sum in its initial round of financing from Battery Ventures of Boston and Venrock Associates of New York. Amber wants whatever cash it raised to ramp up its manufacturing, sales and marketing activities both domestically and internationally. AmberSwitch is claimed to reduce the cost of workgroup switching dramatically.

Corsair Communications Inc has been formed in San Diego as venture-backed buyout of TRW Inc’s PhonePrint business. The PhonePrint access control system identifies and blocks unauthorised cellular calls placed by people using stolen telephone identification numbers. It is installed in cell sites and checks the legitimacy of a call by comparing the unique signal-frequency pattern of the phone making the call with that on record for that phone number. The investors are Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sevin Rosen Funds, Norwest Ventures and Needham & Co. The sum raised was not disclosed.
