Redmond’s campaign to quash Sun Microsystems Inc’s attempt to bend the rules and push Java through the International Standards Organization (ISO) – International Elecrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards process looks like succeeding if the commenting period just ended is anything to go by. In statements posted to ISO’s US Joint Technical Committee 1 Technical Advisory Group web site – the group otherwise known as JTC1 TAG – Apple Computer Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co, Texas Instruments Inc, Compaq Computer Corp, Lucent Technologies Inc, AMP Corp and Intel Corp all side with Microsoft in opposing Sun’s application (CI No 3,153). Only IBM of those companies which have commented supports Sun’s bid. If the PAS submission were to be granted – and JTC1 TAG’s decision is supposed to come down in July – it would allow Sun to push Java through the ISO standardization process without outside comment or alterations. Tuesday was the last day for comments on Sun’s PAS proposal.
