Video games maker and publisher Valve has invited members of the public to trial its upcoming video games hardware Steam Machine.
The game maker has released 300 prototype Steam Machine, designed to offer a PC experience in the living room.
The new device would run on the Linux-Based SteamOS, which would enable manufacturers to develop their own gaming hardware.
Valve said in a statement that the specific machine being tested is designed for users who want the most control possible over their hardware.
"Other boxes will optimise for size, price, quietness, or other factors," the company said.
Valve said other game makers would start selling devices powered by its recently launched games-focused operating system SteamOS in 2014.
Valve currently offers its Steam platform as software running on other systems including Microsoft’s Windows, Apple’s Mac OS, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and other Linux-based software.
