Business internet service provider UUNet Technologies Inc, deviating from its normal strategy of direct sales, has recruited resellers to sell its new ISDN-based internet access service in the UK to small and medium sized businesses. The service called Messenger, is aimed at the 3.6 million businesses in the UK with less than 250 employees, of which the majority connect to the internet, if at all, via modem dial-up. UUNet wants to change this by offering an ISDN-2 based service, and is offering domain name registration, ten email addresses and unlimited usage for 1,000 pounds a year. The service is possible to install in less than 30 minutes, says UUNet. Currently the system needs an installed ISDN line, an ISDN terminal adapter card and a server running Novell Inc’s Intranetware, or Microsoft Corp’s Windows NT server, at a total extra cost of around 4,000 pounds. The local telecoms connections are not included in the price. UUNet expects the price of ISDN line installation to come down from its current level of 736 pounds, if ISDN takes off in popularity.
