MCI Worldcom Inc’s internet service provider subsidiary Uunet has been granted a license to be an internet access service provider in Singapore. Uunet will make Singapore its regional hub, Asia Pacific managing director Marc Sheldon told a press conference, and he said it aspires to be the second largest internet provider to businesses after Singapore Telecommunications within three years. The strength of Uunet lies in its ability to offer a global internet network with high capacity and high reliability, he said, and added that by the end of this year it will be able to offer Singapore firms an internet connection with a capacity of 45 megabits per second. He noted that many multinational corporations based in Singapore have their global internet networks managed from some other hub, and said Uunet hopes to persuade them to relocate their global network hubs to Singapore. He said the company is negotiating with governments in 11 other Asian countries to obtain licenses.
