UUnet Technologies has purchased an undisclosed stake in Taiwan’s Aunet Corporation, marking its first move into the PacRim. It plans to start offering Internet service in Taiwan in July, eventually expanding into other countries in the region. The Taiwan deal comes on the heels of UUnet’s acquisition of the UK’s Unipalm last November, its purchase of 40% of EUnet Germany and most recently an increase in its equity position in UUnet Canada to a controlling 51%. Growth has in good part been fueled byMicrosoft Network Internet traffic, said to account for as much as 40% of the net traffic UUnet now handles. Microsoft owns 10% of the company. As of last week UUnet had 543 points-of-presence (POPs) around the world, 288 of them outside the US.
