According to a recent survey conducted by AUVE, the Spanish Association of Viewdata Users, a large number of the companies and organizations signed up by Telefonica de Espana SA to provide its InfoVia network with information are unhappy with the online service. The main gripes concern the rates they have to pay, Telefonica’s delay in implementing the service once it has been requested and the lack of technical information offered by the network operator. Current rates for information providers range from a minimum of $3,600 ($2,160 sign-up charge plus $1,440 monthly fee) to as much as $40,000, with connection to the Internet on top of that. InfoVia, which offers information, home shopping and home banking services, among others, is now three months old, and is already picking up some 60,000 calls a day and to date has attracted more than 200 information providers. At least 70% of InfoVia’s traffic is people using the network to gain access to the Internet. End users paying local rates of just $1.11 per hour (24% less at night) to use the service may be delighted with InfoVia, but having consulted 159 of the information providers, AUVE found that 62% of these considered the connection rates to be very expensive, while 71% criticised the scant or non- existent technical information made available by Telefonica. And 55% of those surveyed expressed a very low level of satisfaction with the service due to the length of time between requesting the service and this becoming operative. The information providers also gave a low rating to the user software that Telefonica has distributed free of charge to coincide with the launch of the online service.
