USB Type-C is similar to the Apple’s Lightning cable, which is also reversible.

By CBR Staff Writer

USB 3.0 Promoter Group has finalised the specifications for the new reversible USB interface, USB Type-C that can be plugged into the port both ways without worrying about the right way to plug into a device.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group consists of Intel, HP, Microsoft, STMicroelectronics, Renesas and Texas Instruments.

The new USB device is designed to be used in both big devices like laptop as well as small devices like tablets and smartphones.

Port size of Type-C is 8.4 by 2.6mm, but it will be compatible with super Speed USB at 10Gbps and will support USB Power Delivery of up to 100W.

It is similar to Apple’s Lightning cable, which is reversible and has been used as a standard by Apple for a long time.

HP fellow and chief technologist for business, Tom Bonola, said: "In addition to the trend of smaller and more mobile devices driving reduced connector sizes, customers expect ease of use, excellent performance, and high reliability in connectivity solutions.
