US WEST TO USE MINITEL SYSTEM AS THE BASIS OF A GATEWAY SERVICE

By CBR Staff Writer

France Telecom’s Minitel system has scored another coup outre Atlantique: US West Inc is to use the system as the basis of what is disconcertingly becoming known as a gateway service – to other networking people, gateways mean something quite different – for the hog callers and other good ol’ boys ‘n’ girls up there in Omaha, Nebraska starting next autumn; the local paper is an active participant, the phone company looks for an initial 7,000 subscribers after the first year, 50,000 in the fullness of time, either paying $250 to $300 to buy a Minitel-like terminal or renting one for $7.50 or so a month.
