US WEST DOES SYSTEM TO PAY WELFARE BENEFITS BY MACHINE

By CBR Staff Writer

The US West Information Systems and the Applied Communications Inc subsidiaries of US West Inc, Denver, are developing software to enable welfare benefits, and even food stamps, to be delivered to claimants via a mag stripe card-operated automatic teller machine. The system, which is being developed to deliver local, state and federal benefits, is due to go into service in the US West region by the middle of the year.
