US West Inc has teamed with a group of Russian companies to form a new venture to provide cellular telephone service in Russia’s Far East: the new company has acquired or plans to acquire rights to cellular licences in the Khabarovsk Territory, Kamchatka Region and Amur Region, all on Russia’s Pacific coast; US West’s US Westelecom BV is its representative in the venture and the other partners are DAL Telecom International, a private Russian company providing international long-distance services in the Russian Far East, VARTElecom, a company established by a consortium of local telecommunications equipment manufacturers, and the United Telecom joint venture between US West and Intertelecom, owned by the Russian Ministry of Communications.
