US TO ADOPT THE HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION STANDARD AGREED FOR EUROPE?

Sounds a pretty forlorn hope, but the European Commission is hoping to persuade the US to adopt the high definition television standard agreed for Europe, which unlike the Japanese standard is upwards compatible with existing receivers and equipment: contracts totalling $51m have been awarded by the Commission to Robert Bosch GmbH, Philips NV and Thomson SA to design equipment.
