The American National Standards Institute is planning to work with the computer, broadcast and telecommunications industries to set standards for information superhighway services, the New York Times reported. In addition to deciding what existing technologies should be used, the group will decide what further specifications should be developed and from where these should be sourced, in an effort to foster unified standards across the US, says the paper. The group has its first meeting last week at ANSI’s headquarters and attracted 65 companies, including IBM Corp, Digital Equipment Corp, AT&T Corp, Apple Computer Co, the US National Cable Television Association, the Pentagon’s Advanced Research Projects Agency and Bell Communications Research. The group has been dubbed the Information Infra-structure Standards Panel and it is hoping to attract more than 300 companies.
