US Robotics Corp, Skokie, Illinois is not untempted at the idea of eating bankrupt modem manufacturer Hayes Microcomputer Products Inc to become the unquestioned number one in the modem market, but does not like the rules set by the Atlanta bankruptcy court. It has filed a petition to modify the rules for bidding because it does not like a proposal that requires new buyout offers to be at least $7m more than Diamond Multimedia System Inc’s $158m bid. It says it wants to keep its options open.
